Today we are exploring Avignon – the city of Popes. While not as large as Lyon, Avignon has a different more medieval charm. Actually it looks more like an Italian city than French but this could be due to a huge Roman influence on its development. First on the agenda was the stunning Papal Palace and a small Notre-Dame Cathedral next to it as well as the gardens and vineyards attached to the Palace. Most museums in France are about €3 to €5 for adults and kids are free. Papal Palace is €40 for the family. God must really not need the money since its turning so many people away from exploring the actual Palace. We happened upon a lecture at the Notre-Dame in Polish. Once the explanation of the history of the church was concluded, and everyone had their chance to snap a few pictures in the treasury and was shown the large marble chair where the pope would sit, the lights were promptly turned off and the nun invited everyone to the gift store to buy some trinkets. What is that all about? When it comes to opulence none matches that of the church – it’s simply mind boggling!
