The Prince-Bishop of Würzburg resided in the Marienberg Fortress until the early eighteenth century. This was not a suitable residence and in his opinion did not measure up to his position as an absolute monarch. Having won a small fortune in a court case, the Prince Bishop of Wurzburg decided to built a residence that […]
Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg
Koenigsbourg Castle is located not far from where we are hanging around today. Since we elected NOT to take a 2.5km hike to see the towering ruins of the 3 castles above the village of Ribeauvillé we decided to make the 20 min drive to see this castle instead. Koenigsbourg Castle dates back to […]
Riquewihr Part Two
Next stop on our agenda is Riquewihr France. A small village of 1500 we visited last March. There is an amazing little bakery here that we stopped by to get some Macaron, and macaroons. It has also been at least an hour since our last meal so we had some gelato, and sat down down a […]
Ribeauvillé Part Two
So, a brisk drive in the morning to Ribeauvillé – France where we spent a lovely weekend in March. No traffic, no accidents just a wide open road., I think we managed to shave off about an hour of the trip. The breakfast did not quite work out the way we planned but we still managed […]
Sunday Brunch
We are going out for brunch today, not the one filled with endless lines of chaffing dishes filled with food – we are thinking something more simple, less filling but equally as delicious. Sunday Brunch is more like Parisian Breakfast and no one does this better than the French themselves. We are not sure which of the […]
Meanwhile at the Outlets
No trip to Frankfurt is made without a quick stop at the Wertheim Village outlets for some uber cool – Super Dry… Contrary to deceptive Ninja writing on the store sign to make it look like this line is Japanese, it is actually a British store….
Fresh Delivery
One more trip to Frankfurt, one more guest taking advantage of us being here and visiting. We are looking forward to showing off this beautiful city and visiting our favorite places.
Retrospect
A year has come and gone. So far we have visited 11 countries and what seems like innumerable number cities and perhaps even more restaurants and shops. We walked what seems like hundreds of kilometres on old cobble stones, consumed pounds and pounds of gelato and drunk gallons of espresso and wine. The blog has had over 22,000 […]
Architecture Series
My Architecture Series has grown since our latest trip to Berlin. Hopefully more will come soon!
Berlin Loot
After visiting Berlin, we acquired a lot of loot, mostly form the “Ampelmann” Store. Besides that we got a Berlin Flag, and West/East Berlin Sign.
Berlin to Nuremberg
This was a great weekend trip. We all loved Berlin! There is just something different about it. It is young and funky, it has an amazing vibe and energy, the people are young and happy and well dressed, Berlin has it’s own style that is hard to pinpoint. Our only wish was to stay here […]
Berlin Cathedral
Not wanting to be outdone by the Roman Catholics and their obscenely splendid churches – the Protestants built their own showpiece. Having a budget of a king always helps and thus Berlin Cathedral. While this account is not entirely based on historical accuracy, the building nonetheless is wonderful and splendid. It has an air of […]
Water Perspective
After a bit of walking, instead of sitting down to eat something again, we decided to take a boat cruise around Berlin. The boat leaves from the Berlin Cathedral and goes down the driver by the Museum Island, towards the Brandenburg Gate, around government buildings and back. This is a great way to discover Berlin, learn […]
More Berlin
Wasting no time today, we got up early, had a nice breakfast and headed out to see more Berlin. On the agenda today is East Side of Berlin. We were a bit worried because it rained all night but the weather is cooperating so we should have a great day out.
Heaven
After what can only be described as a gastronomical apocalypse yesterday – today we are dining at Radisson Blu. It truly is heavenly!
More Berlin
After the morning walk and lunch we came back to the hotel to check in, and to relax for a bit before round two of our exploration. We walked around the Tiergarten park and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Climbed the Victory Tower, and strolled down the Embassy street, had a dinner and came back to the […]
Meanwhile in Berlin
… a Trabant tour in every shade of colour under the rainbow….
Around Berlin
We are in Berlin – finally! This city is nothing like I thought it would be. Unlike some other amazing European capitals we visited like Paris, London, Prague, Budapest or even Ljubljana, Berlin for the most part is ultra modern, spacious and very very clean. I think our favourite part of Berlin is the Tiergarten. […]
Storming Berlin
This has been a long time coming but we finally found a free weekend to go to Berlin for a short trip. We are looking forward to it.
Planning
It has been fairly quiet on Emilienstrasse for the last few days – but we are actually very busy. We are essentially trying to figure out how to spend the remaining 4 months here. We have both the spring and summer trips to plan out, we are filling up our weekend excursions and short day trips. We are organizing things […]
The Departed
Packed like sardines we set off for Frankfurt to drop off our parents for their trip back to Edmonton. Not a lot of traffic, not a lot of construction nice and easy drive, just the way lazy Saturday drives should be.
Updated Map
This is the updated map of our Easter Weekend travels. A nice trip with hopefully a few more of these to come before we are back. Google Maps
It’s Popular
I am not sure how this happened but it appears that Salzburg Christmas Store is our most popular blog post ever. Second most popular is “Going Back” There are 4 times as many visits to either one of these two posts than any other posts in the top 10 visited blog posts. In fact, […]
Bye Bye Italy
We had a wonderful stay at Agriturismo ai Casoni – honestly if we could we would stay there a few more days. This truly is an amazing place, a mom and pop operation that prides itself on great service, amazing food and wonderful atmosphere. Helped by their 3 kids, all off of whom work in the kitchen, […]
Relaxation
For the rest of us not taking part in the water fight, we simply just sat around on our porch – enjoying a quiet evening in a peaceful and serene Italian countryside with spectacular views at Agriturismo ai Casoni. To the right are the mountains, in front is an old country house, to the left […]
Water Fight
At 5pm, when we were coming home from Treviso, it was still 26C outside and very humid. The best solution for that would be to cool off in the pool which was a bit cold still, so the children went for the second best option – a water fight. There were no winners in this […]
Treviso
Today is our last full day in Italy so we are visiting Treviso. This small city of about 80,000 people is actually quite famous. Treviso became a city in 89 BCE, the main road leading up to the Venetian defence walls is lined with spectacular villas on both sides of the road. Because of its […]
St. Mark’s Basilica
St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous of the city’s churches and one of the best known examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge’s Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has only been the city’s cathedral since 1807. Know for […]
Piazza San Marco
Piazza San Marco often known in English as St Mark’s Square, is the principal public square in Venice. The Palaces, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Bell Tower, the Clock Tower leading to the Rialto Bridge as well as the connection to the Grand Canal and the Grand Canal promenade is all here. It is a massively large open […]
The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square and Basilica are the most iconic landmarks in Venice They are instantly recognizable and quite amazing in their own right. The weather is fabulous, there are no crowds – a perfect day to be in Venice.
Gondola
Going to Venice and not taking a gondola ride is like going to Rome and not seeing the Coliseum or going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. Not only do you get to see Venice from a totally different perspective but you also get to see Venice as people who live there see […]
Local Art
Venice is famous for its glass, colourful and ornate. You can buy just about anything you can imagine made out of glass, from candies and cakes to animals, to pencils and cufflinks. You can also get some good street art. While a lot of it is simply printed there are some local artists that actually […]
Churches
There are some 190 churches in Venice. To see them all in one day or even a week is mission impossible. There are churches dedicated to all sorts of saints and holidays and important historical events you can imagine. ” The plague is over” – let’s celebrate and built a church – literally. To make […]
Around Venice
Some 60,000 people live in historical Venice, while Venice proper houses some 270,000 people. Historical Venice is built on wooden piles which were driven into the seabed and unto which the foundations of the buildings were build on. There are some 486 bridges in Venice we walked on 29 of them. Everything here is different, […]
Venice
We are going to Venice this morning for a day. There are a number of ways of getting there, but since we have a car we going to drive across the Liberty Bridge and park at the first available parking garage. Parking in Venice is interesting. We pulled into the first parking garage which has […]
Equilibrium
Because it is Easter and a lot of places are closed, or rather not opened for dinner we have to plan our meals carefully. We found a great place in the next town, which is about 2.5km away that is open for dinner on Sunday and Monday. Everything on the menu is simply amazing […]
Duomo Conegliano
This church has a status of cathedral. It is not so much due to its size but its historical importance. Dating back to the late 1400’s this church was at the centre of Renaissance movement in Conegliano. Of particular importance was the fact that the front facade of the church was connected to the school and […]
Conegliano
Conegliano is a small town and commune in the Veneto region, Italy, in the province of Treviso, about 30 kilometres north from Treviso. The population of the city is around 36,000 people. Conegliano is noted for its wine, mainly the dry white Prosecco (made from the grape of the same name) which comes in three varieties: tranquillo (still), frizzante (slightly sparkling) and spumante (sparkling). It […]
Conegliano Castle
The remains of a 10th-century castle are situated on a hill that dominates the town and offers beautiful views of the countryside. Formerly belonging to the Bishop of Vittorio Veneto, what remains of the castle is a bell tower, which now houses a small museum, and outer walls. There is a huge courtyard as well as […]
Travel Update
We have now travelled some 22,000 km in our lovely Alfa Romeo throughout Europe as part of our trip here. This excludes the train trips and the time we drove the Volvo. Here is an updated map of places we have been to and seen as we continue to explore more and more of the […]
Agriturismo ai Casoni
We have arrived at Agriturismo ai Casoni, just outside Treviso – where we are going to be spending the next 5 days. This is a small family run agriturismo that produces its own wine and Prosecco as well as the meats and fruits and vegetables. So, as you walk in and are greeted by the hosts […]
Retail Break
It is a very short drive from Ljubljana to Treviso through a beautiful and winding mountain highway. We are taking a short break for a bit of shopping and an espresso at Noventa di Piave Designer Outlet. While we only stopped to get some shoes for the kids, Evelina once again made off like a […]
All About Food
Let’s face it – I think that by now, our need to travel is largely dictated by the fact that we don’t want to be recognized as “are those people eating again?” That’s us, we travel and eat and eat and eat, but it is soooooo good, we simply can’t help ourselves. From this day […]
Franciscan Church of the Annunciation
Turn the other cheek might as well be the biggest lie ever told. Today I got a fair share of “turn the other cheek and give an evil eye” stares. I was simply trying to take a few quiet pictures of this lovely early-Baroque Franciscan Church. Built in the mid 1600’s the layout takes the form of a basilica with […]
Ljubljana Old Town
After 11 months of being here and traveling rather extensively my wife said – finally a country I haven’t been to yet. Slovenia has about 2 million people, 270,000 of which live in its capital – Ljubljana. It is a picturesque and beautiful little city with a lot to offer. While Ljubljana does not have any […]
Ljubljana
We have arrived in Ljubliana, Slovenia. We are sticking to our strictly regimented schedule. Drive, check in, go out to eat!
Off to Ljubljana
We are leaving Salzburg once again and driving to Slovenia. It should be a great drive through the mountains, it is only about 3 hours with a stop or two for coffee. It’s nice and sunny so the views should be amazing and hopefully the traffic will be light.
St. Sebastian’s Cemetery
Some 5 minutes on foot from our hotel is St. Sebastian’s Church. Tucked away behind the church is a famous cemetery. The cemetery was designed in the shape of an Italian Capo Santo. There are a number of famous Salzburg natives found here – their last resting place. Mozart’s widow and his father were buried […]
Stiftskeller St. Peter (803) – Salzburg, Austria
According to some sources, including the restaurant itself of course, the Siftskeller has been serving food since 803, making it the oldest restaurant in Europe. Not 1803 – that’s not a typo. Eight-oh-three. Although we can’t personally verify this data, we can certainly attest to the quality of food and service. We started with a […]
Dinner at St. Peter’s
In two hours we are back here for dinner. Judging by the menu it should be nothing short of spectacular!
