Undaunted by the constant drizzle we continue to explore the nooks and crannies of Salzburg. From the top of the Salzburg Fortress you can see at least 4 churches. We stopped by St. Peter’s Abbey, which is one of the oldest if not the oldest Germany speaking Benedictine monasteries. It houses a massive amount of original written and musical works and is the oldest library in Austria. Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor was premiered in the church, probably on 26 October 1783, with his wife Constanze singing first soprano. Next to the altar where St. Rupert is entombed lies the tombs of Mozart’s sister Maria Anna Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn. Behind the Abbey is a small cemetery and the catacombs dating back to 700.
