Cochem is a small town of 5000 people which dates back to early Celtic and Roman times. In 886, it had its first documentary mention as Villa Cuchema. Cochem is famous for its wines and vineyards as well as its history. It was ruled by bishops, and dukes and princess, it was under Roman and French and Prussian rule throughout its history. There used to be a 13,000 Nazi slave labour camp owned by Bosch where prisoners produced spark plugs and ignition systems for German military. Cochen was devastated during WWII and eventually rebuilt. In 1993 it was hit by a massive flood which saw the river Mosel raise 10m, flooding all homes and business up to the second story. Cochem may only have 5000 residents but it has just as many tourists on any given day it seems. It is busy and loud here. We spent a few hours here waking around and taking a boat tour up and down the Mosel to see the towns from the river but mostly to relax a bit on a beautiful Sunday morning.
