We were not early out of bed today, but in the morning on the way down to the main market square in search of suitable place to sit outside for breakfast we got to explore a bit more of this amazing little town. Ribeauvillé is almost like a medieval movie set – all homes are colourful and built tight together, each one more ornate than the next and painted in the most extraordinary colours that make this town look like a giant rainbow. Other than the two churches, most of the old town is made out of these homes.. After the breakfast we are setting off to Colmar, a city about 15km away from here for a bit of exploration and some shopping. Ribeauvillé is a great place to kick back and relax, everything is close by and there are a lot of local wineries offering wine tasting right in town. Happy times people, happy times.
I’m curious – how did you guys choose this place? I mean – how/where did you hear of it. It looks like it should be on our “go-for-a-visit” list. Looks tremendous.
Henrik, I am so glad you asked this questions.
1. We waned to go to France
2. We did not want to drive too long, we did anyway because the drive here was painful slow..
3. We did not want to go to Strasbourg, as we already went there last summer
4. We were looking at places outside of Strasbourg and Colmar came up in the search
5. There was no room at the Inn in Colmar – so we looked at places outside Colmar
6. We found a great looking hotel with reasonable rates in Ribeauvillé
7. When we got here we realized that we made the right decision, this place is simply great. If you take the side roads you drive through the vineyards which is even better.
8. All this thanks to Booking.com and its great suggestions…
Honestly it was a fluke – but when we looked at the pictures we simply said, got to go and see it.
I love booking.com – it’s how we stumbled upon our Agriturismo in Tuscany too. Anyhoo – looks great! Have fun & say hi to the family!
We love booking.com too, ever since they allowed us to cancel the reservation made as a horrible mistake in the wrong part of France last year, but we also like Venere.com because we always book everything a minute before we check in.
fantastic !!!!!
Venere…. As in “we’re near…. and haven’t made our reservations yet”? 😉
It truly was fantastic!
You are correct it’s how we travel – despite our best efforts we are always last ones to book. BTW that other long answer Anna made me do it…
Wow, what a beautiful place, makes me want to paint the exterior of my house!
What a glorious town! What a difference the colors make to feel of the place. The beige and taupe suburbs of North America are such a sad canvas in comparison.
I agree, these towns are crazy colourful, now where is Lanny on that painting project?
James Howard Kunstler on TED.com has a great talk about American suburbia. He said something to the point of – the immersive ugliness of suburbia is entropy made visible. I do see his point now. On the other hand – maybe the amount and variety of colour in these towns is directly proportional to the number of local wineries, maybe that has something to do with it. 🙂 The villages are like a life sized Diagon Alley from Harry Potter.
Ya, I believe the “architectural controls” the burbs boast of are another signal of the demise of living culture in the community. BTW Lanny doesn’t know about this painting project that we should embark on. Hmmmmm.
That is funny, but I think somehow you will wear him down on this. BTW nice new wheels you got, where did that come from?
