Relatively speaking this is a large town compared to some of the smaller villages we visited. There are about 10K people living in Foiano della Chiana today. This is also an agricultural town which used to be surrounded by marshes on three sides, and not a hill top town like all others. If it was not for the fact that Leonardo da Vinci was hired in the mid 1500s to draw up the plans for the drainage of the marshlands and that the Medici eventually took charge and paid for it and it only took 300 years to complete, mostly because of wars this would be just an ordinary town like many others. Foiano della Chiana was one of the first municipalities to elect a town council by popular majority. Truth be told I think we prefer the hill tops towns.
