We have done bits and pieces of the Roman Forum and the Palatine but this time we took our time. I think we spent good 4 or 5 hours meandering through the ancient ruins of a city built upon an older city built upon and older city still, stories below where the current city is. We also learned that most of the old city was simply demolished to build new buildings, most of the marble was stripped and repurposed on churches and other buildings. One of the most interesting bits was the ruins of the original house that was occupied by Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (later known as Augustus Caesar) who was the great-nephew and adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar. This was a great visit.
