It is another weekend and we are setting off to Prague for another day trip. It is an amazing city, and we love it there. In the caravan following us are Mozejkos, we are going to explore this town a bit more.
St. Klara
St. Klara is a small church in the Old Town district of St. Lawrence on the King’s Road between St. Lorenz Church and Frauentor Chruch. Dating back to 1270, St. Klara is one of the oldest preserved sacral building in the city. During the Second World War, the church was badly damaged in a bombing raids […]
Great Danes
Our Danish friends are here for a week. First order of the day is to go out for a walk after a big brunch. The day did not live up to its +15C today but any day without snow, wind or sleet we will take. Beautiful day to be outside – tomorrow a day […]
Tooth Fairy
The Tooth Fairy has been very busy around this house. Evelina has lost so many teeth that her retainer does not stay in anymore. Today we went to see an orthodontist to get it adjusted, but just as we suspected until some new pearly whites come in, no retainer will be worn. Evelina seems quite […]
Get Informed
Let your voice be heard. On the anniversary of Aaron Swartz’s tragic passing, leading internet groups and online platforms announce Day of Activism Against NSA Surveillance Mobilization, dubbed “The Day We Fight Back” to honor Swartz & celebrate the anniversary of SOPA Blackout
Spring Warmth
There are more and more signs of Spring. Flowers are springing everywhere, buds on the trees are coming out and shrubs are starting to bloom. Also the local beavers are out of their dens and out in full force sharpening their teeth. We are up to mid teens in temperature which makes these outings […]
NEWS
Massive but orderly lineups, and much excitement was caused by Nuremberg getting its own Dunkin’ Donuts. We went out to find it today. For those of you who have visited us here, the store is close to the main train station, and the 3D cinema, or a 5 min walk from our flat. Today, […]
Tall Church Spire
The amazingly beautiful day with blue sky and an occasional cloud floating by provides a perfect canvas for looking at the detailed spires topping many of the buildings throughout the city. These are just a few of them from the Old Town, before my battery died in the camera.
We Are Calling It.
It’s Spring. We are back to double digits with beautiful blue sky and sunshine! Birds are chirping, people are out in full force on the patios eating ice cream and having iced drinks. It is absolutely gorgeous, and warm – and we love it.
Swedish Ferrari
We spotted this outside our home today and there was definitely something odd about this disguise.
The Island
One of the most quaint places in Nuremberg, is the little island in the middle of the old town. It is tiny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. From one end of the island you can see a bridge and the old hospital. If you look online it is […]
I Want to Believe
I am not sure where they hide swans for the winter but today we spotted a couple of them on one of the moats, which hopefully means spring is almost here. You couldn’t tell that if you looked around at what people are wearing in town; let’s just say that fur coats have been out […]
St. Jacobs
Across the square from St. Elisabeth Church is St. Jacobs Church. The Gothic old-Franconian Church of St. James was originally the hospice church for the German Order. The original building was erected in mid to late 14th century. The Church was badly damaged during the war and was rebuilt with some alterations. The nave houses some […]
St. Elisabeth
At the far end of the promenade leading away from St. Lorenz Church is a St. Jacobs Square on which two churches are built. St. Jacob and St. Elisabeth. The neo-classical church building is divided into three rooms. This is a square that is pulled apart in the middle and broken by a rotunda. The entrance and the […]
Old Town – South
We set off South today to get to the ‘bottom’ part of the old town. We know that the German National History Museum is located there as is the installation of the Way of Human Rights, which display the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 27 pillars written in German and one other language. One day we […]
Pre-Pro
Evelina’s new title with her football team is pre – pro, and now she looks the part too.
More Snow
We are slowly beginning to understand how winter works here. When it snows, you get out to take a picture of it, because by noon most of it, if not all of it is gone. We had snow here now on and off for the last two days. There are places in the city where […]
Theatre
We finally got a chance to see Kasia and Volker today, we have not seen Kasia since last year. We stepped out for a coffee at a movie theatre. We also found out that the movie theatre by our house, is the new Dolby Atmos theatre. Who knew! Now we are going to have to […]
More Snow
Apparently it snowed last night, not much but enough to leave residue of some white sprinkling on the roofs. I think today was the coldest day that we can remember pushing +2C maybe +3C. It was actually chilly. We did not find a lot of snow but we did find more signs of spring which […]
Seasons
I am not implying that winter is over, I am simply saying that spring is coming. Glorious!
More Details
The more we get around the more of these things we notice. We walk down the same path time and time again and always find something new. Nuremberg is quite amazing from that perspective, and this is just a small part of the old town.
Nuremberg Details
It seems that just about every old building in the city has its own set of interesting details. Sculptures, sun clocks, reliefs, turrets and towers, caps and carvings. One of the more perplexing ones is a turret capping on St. Lorenz Church and it is that of a monkey reading a book.
Happy Birthday Evelina
Today is the day when everyone in this family can measure their age with two digits. Joining the club is the littlest one – Evelina, turning 10 today and proud of it. Happy Birthday! Thank you all for your wishes, cards and gifts, it really made her day today.
European Charm
This morning, we set off to do a bit of grocery shopping at our favourite store – METRO. When we got out onto the main road, there was police on every intersection, roads were closed off as were the turn off lanes to go left or right, businesses were shut down as well. We had […]
Summer Plans
We are slowly thinking of what our summer might look like and here is our wish list. We did not include the cities we already visited because Google Maps is very difficult to deal with when it comes to dropping pins in the same city. A quick calculation shows: 9214 km and about 99 hours […]
Beautiful Day
It is still quite warm, and there is still no snow – winter is in full swing in Nuremberg.. We continue exploring the city on foot, one street at the time. After Christmas and Paris we will need a lot of walking to work off the calories be brought back with us. With the Christmas […]
The Italian Job
We know a guy, who knows a guy that told us to follow him to a parking lot on the outskirts of the city in an industrial area to meet this Italian guy who comes to Nuremberg once a month with a van full of goods. He drives 1100km in one day to bring fresh […]
Adventurous
This is a very common sight in Germany. It is true that Germans like they cars black and clean. Sometimes, you see a silver car or a white one, but mostly they are black and very, VERY clean. Can you spot the adventurous German here?
St. Egidien
We have walked past this church many times on many walks to the old town. The kids walk by it everyday, twice a day, going to and from school. The church is considered a significant contribution to the baroque church architecture of Middle Franconia. The original medieval church was started in the early 12th Century, and was […]
Off to Paris
We have boarded ICE. We are on our way to Stuttgart where we are going to have a little lunch and change trains. TGV, the French train will take us to Paris.
ICE to TGV
We are setting off to Paris. Being here, we can’t think of a better city to be in for New Year’s Eve. We are going by train just to mix things up, and because having a car in Paris is absolutely useless, this just makes sense.
Road Trip
Our first road trip this holiday season will be to see our family in Warsaw and to spent a few days with them and celebrate Christmas. We are hoping to get there later on tonight and start the holiday relaxation first thing Thursday morning.
Happy Holidays
We are going to be starting our holidays a bit early this year and doing a bit of travel. As such today when the school ends at 1pm we are picking up the kids and driving off. Our Nuremberg residence will be closed for the holiday season.
Christmas Countdown!
It’s 10 days before Christmas. Since we did not get ourselves an Advent Calendar to have a small treat each day we will just have to make do with this little box of French delight. To yours and our health then, we raise a glass to Merry Christmas.
Mid December
The Christmas Market is still in full swing with just as many people around the stalls as ever, so we avoid the main square like the plague. However, there are still some nice and quiet places around the old town where it’s nice and quiet and empty and serene. It is still quite warm, mostly […]
Fußball-Bundesliga
In one respect Nuremberg is like Edmonton. We have either the worst or the second worst football club in the German Bundesliga – FC Nuremberg, much like Edmonton with its hockey team or Williams in Formula 1. Sure they were all champion teams at one point in time but it was so long ago no […]
The Greener Grass
It appears that the first real snow has melted faster than anticipated. Essentially the next morning there was no trace of it. This however, spurs the people to get into full winter mode and put winter tires on. For now we are back to green grass and mild temperatures of 6 to 9C so quite […]
First Real Snow
Today marks the first day of a real snow fall. We heard stories about this event from the locals so we were ready. Naturally, we got our camera out to take some photos of this momentous occasion before the snow melts and there is no trace of it.
Take Two
It appears that Tuesday is a better day to start off the week, so we are out once again trying to have a closer look at the market. Still too many people there, this is absolutely crazy. With about 40,000 people per day visiting this place I think this place is going to stay a bit […]
Christmas Market
We got out the morning to see if we can get a closer look at the market. That was not a good idea. There were just as many people there today as there were at the opening. I think we are going to have to come out a few more times, maybe even Monday morning […]
Relaxing
Boris and Evelina found a bookstore in the old town that is a lot like Chapters less the coffee bar but with a lot of seating to sit down relax and unwind.
Abstract
On the way back from office I swapped the lens on the camera to grab a bit of abstract as only nature can make.
Winter Time
It’s officially winter here. There is still a bit of snow on the ground hiding in the shade, away from the sun. I had to go out to see Volker today so I took the camera and the big lens and started walking. I went through the deep part of the castle moat to get […]
Tragedy
It’s true. We got some snow overnight. I don’t think we were mentally ready for it. Most of what had fallen has disappeared by noon but there are places here and there in the shade where you can still see the white stuff. a whole 1 to 2mm of it.
Off to Austria
We are heading out to Austria. We are hoping to get to Salzburg to visit the old stomping ground of the one and only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The weather should be around 7C and as long as it does not rain too much then we should have fun.
Moss
Fall is here. It’s wet. There are some trees with are still quite green, and some that seem like they are on fire. The ones that have no leaves are green with all the moss that’s growing on them. It’s quite beautiful and colourful.
Defence Walls
We have been trying to get out of the house and actually walk around the entire Nuremberg Imperial Castle on the outside of the defence walls. This will not be a quick walk, I think it will take at least 2 hours. The idea behind this exercise is to take a photo of every know […]
Something Modern
We have walked past this street about one hundred times, literally. It’s on the way to the Lego among other things. Not only did we find these very modern looking buildings right within the castle walls but we also found one of the best Sushi restaurants in the city called Sushi Glas. In Alberta there […]
Celebration
It appears that each special occasion cumulates with a visit to our favorite pizza joint. L’Osteria is then our place of occasion here in Nuremberg.
Creative Spirit
Evelina keeps making these little gems – this one she made for me today.
