I don’t think you can walk more than 50 m through the Copenhagen train station without running into a 10m x 15 m advertisement for one of these. At first we ignored it and remain strong and sceptical. I mean who drinks Baileys these days anymore? Finally we gave in and got a bottle they […]
Midnight Run
To Munich and back, door to door – that being our house to Zenith Cultural Hall and back. One quick stop for gas a 3 sets of constructions. 326km in total in just under 2 hours. Driving at night on autobahn is just one of those things that one has to try. The only side […]
The Far Side
Its beautiful and sunny. We continue to explore the city, or rather the old town. This time we are directly on the far side of the castle walls. One day we are planning on walking around the entire castle to see it from the far side of the defence walls and the moat just like […]
Autumn Air
Autumn is here to stay that much is true. While it gets up to 15C during the day, it does cool off for the night. Its Saturday, and we are burning a lap around the old town. The old town is getting ready for the upcoming and world famous Christmas Market. We can’t wait. […]
St. Lorenz
Here is another look at the church of St. Lorenz. This medieval church of the former free imperial city of Nuremberg is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The church was badly damaged during the Second World War and later rebuilt. It is one of the most prominent churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. The choir was started in 1445 by medieval […]
Home Sweet Home
We are home! 953km with a 40km bonus round for missing an exit ramp not once but twice. We are relaxing with a bit of Denmark we brought with us, actually 8 pieces of Denmark.
Under the Danish Sky
We have finally arrived in Odense. What was supposed to be a quick 8.5h drive turned out to be 11.5 hours. What a nightmare. Construction, traffic, accident, accident in a construction zone where 3 lanes merged into one, rain, fog – you name it we drove through it!
Emergency Stop
We can’t seem to get going today. It took us almost an hour to get out of the city, an hour later we traveled 120 km, then something started squealing. Rear right wheel breaks seemed to seize. The wheel was so hot I thought it would met the tire right off the rim. I took […]
Going North
We are setting off for a week of holidays. The children are getting their first fall school break, which is well deserved and earned as they have been working very hard both in school and with Saskia their private tutor. We are going to be heading up to Denmark and Sweden driving mostly through Germany. […]
Courtyard
Courtyard, or our back yard has two trees, both maples, one is 6 and the other one is about 7 stories high. They are just starting to turn yellow and drop their leaves.
Sunset
All of the sudden and out of nowhere the sky turned red. We jumped to the window to see what was on fire! The sky was. It turned bright red and back to normal in a matter of about 5 minutes. I managed to only snap a few shots before the spectacle went away. […]
Morning Stroll
It’s 11:30 am, it’s 20C and it is absolutely beautiful outside. We are off to the Old Town to run some errants. We added another 5.2km of leisurely walk by the moats and the old town, bought some fresh pretzels and headed home to meet the kids at 1:15 for lunch when they are back […]
Nuremberg – Sunny
It’s 20C and we are out for another walk wearing a t -shirt. The old town is full of people, everyone has something to do and everywhere you look, every coffee shop and restaurant is full. We got out to return some books to the library and decided to circle a bit of old town. […]
Meanwhile in Nuremberg
I simply don’t know what this is, but it’s right outside our house. If we had to hazard a guess – photos for Christmas cards?
Nuremberg – Walk
We did not make it to the bank today as planned. We decided to walk the other way to discover less travelled part of our neighbourhood. We found a great bakery with really good pretzels. Pretzel sandwiches are all the rage and finding a perfect pretzel in a bakery close by is always good. So […]
Autumn Spotting
Autumn is slowly creeping in. Pretty much everywhere you look there is a hint of it. This, being a beautiful day that it was, we went out for a morning walk along the castle walls to get out of the house and get some fresh air. We had so much fun we are going to make […]
Seasons
Looks like fall is arriving early this year.
Finally
We finally got our silly internet sorted out after what seems like an eternity. We are connected and ready for FaceTime any time.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone and all the best to you. We are done our Thanksgiving sans butternut squash but we know what you will feel like 5 hours from now. We had way too much food that’s for sure. We finally got to see Kasia and Volker and Volker’s mom and the 7 of us sat […]
Breaking with Tradition
It is a beautiful Thanksgiving day in Nuremberg. To keep up with Canadian tradition we got up early to start on the Thanksgiving dinner in particular our usual double baked butternut squash. We have been making this for the last 15 years and no Thanksgiving was ever without this dish. In fact is it the […]
Chariot
This then is a perfect family chariot! It’s beautiful, its spacious, and its not coming to Canada any time soon if ever. We see these on the Autobahn every once in a while, never for more than a split second as they fly by, gliding effortlessly, with a mighty roar. Available in Germany in, wait […]
Double 00 Status
After months of relentless pursuit we have triumphed over the Polish beaurocracy and have obtained our double OO status. Between the two of us there are 6 passports – we are now now accepting missions wink wink..
Munich
We are setting off to Munich once again. This time to pick up both passports – finally.
Unity Day
Today is the national holiday of German Unity Day. It is as we learned neither re-unification nor unification day – its a day of unity. Needless to say, everything is closed except restaurants and coffee shops – unless of course they are on the route of the marathon. The marathon went right by our house […]
We Are Connected
Finally we are connected. Our internet has arrived in a small box today. For now we are running off of a HSDPA USB stick for the next few days until the line is activated. Once that happens our connection speed should increase at least 10 fold!
Ineptitude
German efficiency and precision are legendary – that much is true. How Kabel Deutschland, our provider of imaginary internet, ever became a German company is beyond my comprehension. We are still waiting for them to find a conduit in the building, to find out why our cable does not connect and why we still don’t have […]
About School
The children have been in school now for almost 3 weeks. So far the school experience is very much different than in Canada. Here are some of our observations: Only one glue stick is needed for the entire school year – finally! Our supply list was about €40.00. No copy paper, no Kleenex and no […]
Walk in the park
Somehow after almost a 2 hour walk we did not get a picture of all the stuff we collected.
Ducks
On house is surrounded by two parks, one large and one small. The larger park has water canals, with beavers, ducks and other fowl. Being sunny and dry we set out to take out some of the stale bread from the house and feed the ducks on our walk to the park to collect some […]
Tights
Never underestimate the power of creativity, imagination, determination and a pair of worn tights with a hole on the big toe. Evelina is in a creative mood today and with a pair of scissors she made a ‘creation’ which she proudly modelled for us. Evidentially proving that there is a way to put on tights […]
Library
Close to the underground movie theatres is the public library. Today, on the way back from the Altstadtfest, we circled around the library to get signed up. The service is free, you are allowed to keep stuff for 4 weeks and if you are late the penalty is € 0.10/week for each late item. There is […]
Altstadtfest
Another weekend and another festival. We have two festivals going at the moment, this one and Volks Festival. Just another excuse to get out, eat, drink and wonder around.
City Museum Fembohaus
Nuremberg’s only remaining large late Renaissance merchant’s house shows a brief history of Nuremberg. It’s modern and sleek and newly opened. The building is still undergoing a major renovation on the outside but the inside is ready to explore. One of the best exhibits here and the starting point of the tour is a […]
Cakes and Presents
After a great dinner we headed home for cakes, coffee and presents. This was a great birthday and while we could not have everyone we would like to have here it was still a happy day for Boris.
Family is Back
Our cousins that came and went are back from their holidays to Poland and Austria and are here with us on a quick 4 day stopover before they go back to Canada. The weather is not cooperating much, it’s raining a fair bit but we are making the most of it. After all there are […]
Going Home
The drive is very slow. It seems everyone in Italy is sticking to using two lanes at the same time. Austria is all under construction so most of the drive through Austria was at 100 km/h – shame. We stopped for a quick dinner in Austria in Tyrol then set off on our way. Finally, […]
Nuremberg Details
With the whole family here we do a lot of walking around, not just to get ice cream either. We keep going around and finding new things to explore and look at.
Full House
There are now 11 people in this house! It seems like that is a lot but we still have sleeping and sitting room available.
One More Time
It’s been a while since we visited our favorite pizza place. It’s still as good as it was the first time we were here!
Documentation Centrum
Dokumentationszentrum in Nuremberg is a museum which houses a permanent exhibition called Fascination and Terror. The exhibition traces the history of National Socialism, Nazi Germany and the rallies held in Nuremberg which was considered to be “the most German of all German cities” by Hitler and his supporters.
Courtroom 600
This is where the famous Nuremberg Trials took place in 1945 after World War II ended. The Courtroom 600 is still used today as a functioning courtroom. This room was remodelled for the trials and after they were finished it was restored to its original form. Upstairs, from the court room is a very simple […]
Exploring Nuremberg
We are still exploring this great little city
Exploring Old Town
A lazy Sunday. With Kozluk family here for a visit, we set out to show off bits and pieces of this great city starting with the old town and a couple of its main churches. Both of these churches were greatly damaged in the war and rebuilt but what they have in common is a […]
Evening Stroll
When the night is this beautiful – its hard to resist going out to the old town for a little stroll. We did exactly that, a nice walk to get some ice-cream in the old town.
Around the Neighbourhood
We finally had a moment to get out of the house and explore the neighbourhood today. We wanted to size up the two parks we have on either side of the building, the many canals and also to find out where the closest bakery and shops are to get some groceries. It turns out, […]
Citizen P
Today I finally got an update on the status of my Polish citizenship confirmation. It appears that the Polish bureaucracy is finally starting to crack and give in. Officially then, Poland has confirmed that I am and always have been a Polish citizen. Next step is to wait for the documents to arrive and head […]
Antler TIme
We have assembled the house and actually moved some furniture around today to get that new minimalistic look we are hoping to achieve here. Basically no one is carrying any more boxes upstairs and no one is interested in assembling anything anymore. We are in a travel mood. After 10 days of hard graft, it […]
House Assembled
There are no more boxes to assemble. There are no more boxes to take down. The home assembly I now completed. We are officially open for business and the dates are going fast. Our first guests were the Great Danes. Our first guests from Canada are arriving on the 25th of August and we are […]
Faster Please
Today we fitted the kitchen and promptly headed out to the store to buy some pots and pans. I also managed to finally sign up for some high speed internet through Kabel Deutschland. For the last 10 days I have been working off if my iPhone that is tethered to my MacBook Air. It’s not […]
Dinner Time
It’s official after much searching and a lot of fiddling around we fitted the kitchen in today and made a first proper cooked home dinner tonight. We feel so civilized.
