The Würzburg Residence

The Prince-Bishop of Würzburg resided in the Marienberg Fortress until the early eighteenth century.   This was not a suitable residence and in his opinion did not measure up to his position as an absolute monarch. Having won a small fortune in a court case, the Prince Bishop of Wurzburg decided to built a residence that would  proclaim his political standing.  The building was dubbed the “nicest parsonage in Europe” by Napoleon. It was heavily damaged during World War II, and restoration has been in progress since 1945.  Today a number of rooms have been restored to their original splendour, those include the white room with amazing stucco work, the great room the chapel and the Prince’s wing.  One of the audince rooms is decorated with painted mirrors gilded with 2.5kg of gold – it would make Donal Trump blush.  Being a Prince – Bishop has its privileges.

No pictures are allowed in the residence but in  the sprawling gardens you are  allowed to take as many pictures as you want.
