Vineyard Tour

This morning after breakfast we met up with Astrid and Klaus and their friends Lotta and Daniella. On the agenda for todday was a walk though the vineyards from Eller to Bremm which are nested along the Mosel River.  These two small villages are separated by about 2.3km from where we parked to where we sat down at Franzen Winery.  Our trip actually took us high above the main road to an elevation of 191m on our walk though the vineyards and it stretched the hike to 3.5km.  The slopes have their own microclimate which on average is 10C warmer than down below.  It was hot.  Half way through the expedition which involved narrow paths, ladders, steel support cables and chains we stopped for a bit of rest and had a small picnic.  Astrid and Daniella organized it.  We had some lovely cheese, and stuffed olives, fresh baguettes, dry sausages, and a couple of bottles of lovely chilled local white wine, in proper glasses, we even  had a table cloth too.  For dessert, Astrid backed some high energy, muffins – yum!  After a nice break and a bit of rest we set off to Bremm.  There are 12 officially recognized wine growing regions in Germany, this one is the 3rd largest.  It produces mainly Riesling wines – which are absolutely splendid.  The steepest vineyard here is at 68% grade – which is insane.  The views from the vineyards are absolutely breathtaking, you can see vineyards on both sides of the river, you can see the river winding through them and small towns and villages dotting the landscape.  This was no ordinary vineyard tour that is for sure.  After a short stop at the Franzen winery to rest and sample and buy some wines, we got a lift from the owner to the next village where Lotta and I picked up our cars so we could drive everyone back for our 4:00 wine tasting appointment in the village of Pommern. What a splendid morning!
